Understanding reconstitution
Reconstitution is a general laboratory concept: dissolving a dry, freeze-dried compound in a specified liquid. Here's the idea in plain English — without any product-specific procedure.
A dry compound
Some products arrive lyophilized (freeze-dried) — a dry powder or cake — because that's more stable for storage and shipping.
A liquid (diluent)
Reconstitution is the general concept of dissolving that dry compound in a specified sterile liquid.
A solution
Once dissolved, the compound is in liquid form, and mass (mg) and volume (mL) become two separate things to track.
A diluent is the sterile liquid a dry compound is dissolved in. The specific diluent and amount are defined by the verified instructions for that product — not assumed.
Before liquid is added, a vial lists total mass (mg). After reconstitution, you also have a volume (mL). The relationship between them (concentration, mg/mL) depends entirely on how much liquid was added.
It's a common diluent term (often water containing benzyl alcohol to inhibit bacterial growth). Whether it's appropriate for a given product is defined by that product's verified instructions.
